Yeah, Brew City's different. BTW: I've been back in LA since the pandemic hit and remote working became possible. At the moment, I'm in NYC. Walked by the Belleclaire yesterday. Used to be $75 a week. Now it's $300 a night. I miss the piss-stained carpets and the psychos just outside the front door...
With Eric's comment below, we're up to three pendejos.
Mine was less affectionate than yours. I waited on tables at Santa Fe restaurant just off Columbus Avenue at the same time you were at Zabar's. Picking up plates in the kitchen, I was the pendajo for three angry Dominicans who had enough of me getting orders wrong. They were delighted to translate for me, and, eventually, started using the English word.
"I think it's because we talk about jazz." Somebody needs to honor that line. Let it be me.
Holy shit. I'm stuck in your time warp. I lived at the Belleclaire Hotel back when it was an unspeakably filthy murderous SRO in the early 1980s and had breakfast at Zabar's at least 3 times a week (when not just snagging a bagel from H&H) before pedaling across the park for my lunch shift at Maxwell's Plum. Strange to think I probably saw you behind the counter back then. Qué pendejo.
Love it!
i just love this one.

Too bad you couldn’t give me a discount at the Carnegie Deli at the corner of 55th and Broadway right next to the Hotel Woodward, Pendejo😎

Those SROs up and down Broadway in the mid 80s were no joke Ray. That's all the way past Milwaukee!
